How to drive Innovation in your Enterprise

Vishal's session explores how you can foster innovation in your organization. including Case studies and unique insights.

Session Transcript:

good morning my name is Vishal Gupta, I'm the global cto at unisys and I will present today around how corporations can foster innovation to start with when we think about this topic on how corporations can foster innovation.

We will touch on three or four things one we'll talk about how the world of technology is changing because you have to sort of understand what those changes are in order to foster innovation we'll talk about what are the types of innovations that can be there because many times to foster innovation you have to sort of define what innovation is and then we'll talk about specific case studies that foster uh one of those types of innovation and you know overall how do you drive a transformation of your talent so let's talk about.

How the world of technology is changing so you know in the past the world was very nicely sorted out into waterfall and virtual machines and and high performance monolithic systems and on-prem machines and we all know that changed over the last 10 to 15 years into people really moving to agile and containers and microservices and public cloud in fact people are embracing cloud in a very big way now and that was primarily driven from the desire for speed people want to get things done fast the model was still both on security because they wanted to make sure that security was sort of more of an afterthought and it was lot driven from cost savings so that way.

Screenshot (61)-1If you went to containers and if you went from servers to vms you saved money when you went to containers or serverless, you saved even more money optics versus capex now the world is not stopping there you know if you see the biggest companies today are all technology companies the amazons the Microsoft's and the apples of the world and they are really on the leading edge and they're really thinking about really how do you move into devsecops so you really bring all the three disciplines together on development and operation security.

They're thinking of emerging technologies a lot like AI and ML and uh augmented reality and blockchain and they're thinking about not just a hybrid cloud but and not just a multi-cloud but a cloud with an intelligent edge uh that's uh supported by 5g and others and it's really around providing that end-to-end visibility and security that's built in and not just transforming your cost but also transforming your margins so you have higher productivity and we know companies like aws and azure and mike and uh are leading some of this.

So it's fundamental business process transformation so that's what's happening in the world of technology now let's look at what are the types of to to drive innovation what are the big things you have to do the first thing you have to do is uh and you know this is a quote from henry ford is that you know henry ford says and henry ford you know as we may know is you know the guy who even though the engine the car engine was invented in Germany, henry ford was the one.

Who actually drove scaled innovation right he he was the first one to actually manufacture over 10 million cars and and what he was able to do was very unique right he said coming together as a beginning keeping together is progress but working together.

That's success so really when you're thinking about innovation and big innovation scaled innovation that requires the ability to reach out to partner and to collaborate across disciplines both within the company and outside and so in addition to the technology where you have to think about how do you drive a culture of collaboration in your company and then let's think about what are the different types of innovation.

So we know what to aim for so if you think about how do you build winning solutions for any company that's serving either consumers or businesses innovation can really come from four sources right you could either solve a specific problem a specific outcome that your customer base is looking for and that requires customer intimacy so that's example of solution innovation you could drive innovation by doing things faster.

So if you think about cloud a lot of it as things faster you know instead of getting a machine in three weeks you're able to split up a vm in in minutes so innovation could come from speed innovation can also come from a really functionally integrated strategy so when you bring a lot of the people together you can create net new outcomes net new things that you did not have before you can take all the friction out and then innovation could also come from you know your ability by integrating things aggregating things so that way uh through this intersection of different technologies of different offerings.

You can drive you know a platform strategy much like if you see today a service now or adobe you know or or a sales force sort of driving more of integrated innovation where they say hey if you have one thing from us getting the second thing is so much easier because everything is fully integrated um so now let's think about I mean.

BFH BLOG

We've understood you know innovation requires collaboration culture requires understanding of different technologies requires could come from many sources let's look at some real life examples of innovation um so let's start with healthcare you know in this world uh with pandemic health care is key one of the key ways uh innovation drove you know now telemedicine has become very big um and if you think about it one of the ways you can transform health care is transform the way it's delivered and so if you combine IOT and your cloud then you can solve the problem around both access to healthcare so that way you know doctors don't have to go.

Where people are people could be wherever they are but in a rural area urban area you could you know solve the access issue between emerging countries like uh you know like India or other places which have very low bandwidth and low cost and so this is something when I was at cisco we drove where we created health presence it integrated with all the medical devices so the doctor could not only see you but could also examine you with all relevant medical data.

All of it then getting transcribed into the emr and while still having a great patient experience where we integrated presence technologies and AI and the technology was such like you've seen zoom today where it could adapt to low bandwidth and low cost so that way even in a rural area it could be maintained centrally through the cloud and that drove amazing access to healthcare millions of people were able to get access to healthcare.

They could access the doctors while sitting in the primary health centers who were in the district hospitals or could be in tertiary hospitals and the patient was a win-win for patient too because the patients didn't have to you know go to cities go to all other places and we see that now telemedicine is becoming very relevant with the pandemic going on in the U.S. too.

So that's one example with iot and cloud a way to drive innovation in the delivery of healthcare and this would be example of perhaps uh you know an intersection of different pieces of technology uh to drive an outcome the second innovation let's talk about it is uh you know again whenever you have a problem you know this is a case study from fema where you know whenever a disaster strikes the problem becomes of the supply chain.

So you know you may in case of a disaster you may need all kinds of you know food and water supplies and other things but those are simply you know hard to track and where they are and how do you make sure that they don't get misused and also how do you make sure they go to the right people who actually have suffered from the disaster and the supplies themselves uh you know uh are not spoiled and so this is the case where if you linked biometrics to really validate that the people who were you know authorized to receive the eight are the ones getting it and you had IOT and blockchain.

Screenshot (4)

So that way you could essentially have all the sensors to track where things are and the blockchain is ensuring the integrity of the overall uh of the overall supply chain to make sure that you know you had full provenance of things and so this way you could track both people and things and this could drive a very large reduction in fraud over 70 times saved in tracking of people trying to figure out where things are how to get to them and also improvement in satisfaction.

So it's a lower cost better integration better things and so a more effective government at the end of the day let's look at a third example in security you know we all know security is a big area these days uh people are really uh you know from a security perspective uh they are uh you know uh we're seeing a lot of breaches a lot of ransomware spreading and so from a security perspective you know um what has happened is in the past that with ransomware is spreading right people take in the in the traditional way.

They take many hours too many days to respond because some event occurs they have to generate a ticket that takes time to analyze and then you know it has to go and remedy it and as you can see on the left a lot of breaches happen because the response time has been in many hours too many days on any problem that is found what what unisys did was to really turn this on its head and say can we you know as soon as we if we can drive fast detection and fast response we can solve this problem and so by integrating with some systems like a service now or a splunk or a logarithm we could figure out where is the problem happening and even if we were not sure that uh you know all the investigation not done.

What we could figure out is to isolate one particular host where we believe there is a potential instance of malware and so by isolating at multiple different levels you a you could respond much faster so you went from many days to 10 seconds and b you know you what you could do is you could make sure the malware does not spread if it turns out that machine was finally okay you could turn it back into the normal zone and so you can have many levels of isolation and that thereby really having a very fast response time and so now we have seen three examples where a combination of outcome innovation integration and portfolio innovation and intersection innovation has played a role let's sort of summarize.

You know there's a big opportunity that's getting created by the combination of changes in cyber in digital and in cloud the innovation we saw can come from many sources but not just bringing people together but also bringing products together bringing uh ideas together bringing outcomes and you know lots of teams have driven lots of great innovation the key is continuous learning so if you're able to enable your team to drive that continuous learning.

Then I think uh you know when you're training them in different technologies you are making sure that the content is is effective uh then i think uh the teams will uh your teams will really innovate and will step up so hope this was useful again my name is Vishal Gupta, I'm the global cto at Unisys and I hope you found this useful.
