Courtesy of Ingersoll Rand, Holly Rogers wrote a synopsis of her speaking session discussing 'The Farmers Insurance® Operational Excellence Journey'.
How do you drive Operational Excellence with limited resources? If you have a small team and a large company, you may be struggling with the answer to this question. You may have hired external consultants at a premium to help manage the business demand. What can you do to build capability within your organization?
“Give a man a fish and feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and feed him for life”. This is a common Chinese proverb that can be applied in businesses with limited resources. How can we teach our Business Units to “fish”? What tools can your team provide to enable the company to improve their own processes without always needing your help?
Farmers® has long been promoting Lean methodology as a way to help build awareness and capability within the organization. However, we continue to face the challenge of culture change, creating the need to: 1) continue to promote Lean awareness within the Enterprise, 2) partner with interested Business Units to help educate them and provide needed tools, and 3) provide ongoing support to help develop these newly learned skills.
Building this capability can include two main components - tactical as well cultural. How can we promote awareness, provide tools needed for success, and engage and empower the employees to change their mindset?
In summary, if you have a large company and limited team resources, consider what you can do to teach your business units “how to fish”, writing each employee into the story, providing them with tools for continuous improvement, thus enabling you to serve more as a consultant and helping you prioritize project and program work.
