2021 Digital Transformation and Operational Excellence at Sandman Hotel Group

Our small group of top-performers came together during a global crisis to successfully set us up with a complete digital platform in six months and make us the best in our category!

Sandman Hotel Group has been in operation for over 50 years and is proudly one of Canada’s fastest-growing, familyowned hospitality companies. Our hotel portfolio includes three tiers: Economy, Premium and Luxury, with over 60 destinations across Canada, 3 in the United Kingdom, and 1 in the United States ( Plano, Texas).

We knew there was an opportunity to modernize our hotel technology. With the onset of Covid-19 and seeing an unprecedented increase in cancellations and decline in occupancy rates at all of our hotels, we were forced to reduce the size of our teams and find innovative ways to adapt and drive revenue. At the same time, digital transformation began to accelerate rapidly and the adoption of e-commerce sped up by as much as ten years.

We knew we had to fast-track our plan to modernize to remain competitive and ensure future sustainability and longterm success for our hotel brands. So, with a small team of our top 23 team membersworking from home, we embarked on a journey to find the best hotel technology partner to help us develop and launch a strong e-commerce platform for three hotel brands. And move five dated and non-digitalized guest loyalty programs to one digital customer-centric loyalty program under six months.

By April 7, 2021, our team secured a multi-year contract with TravelClick – Amadeus, a global leader in innovative hospitality software solutions, with our principled and effective negotiations during the RFP process. The team leads successfully led the implementation of a plan that ensured everyone on the team understood the strategic objectives so they could collaboratively determine the necessary tasks and take action on a considerably large number of details following a well-thought-out process. Through collaboration and hard work, our small Digital Transformation and Loyalty. Team became the tactical force that successfully developed and launched:

  • Four branded websites for three different hotel brands
  • A new booking engine
  • A new Call Centre Platform
  • Moved five different and dated non-digitalized guest loyalty programs into one digitalized customer-centric loyalty program

RESULTS

Since our digital transformation and transition to TravelClick, our e-commerce conversation rate has improved significantly, with an increase of 18.62% over the previous year during the same 5-month period. We now send transactional and promotional emails to all of our databases dating back two years with implied and express consent users and have seen an open rate increase of 100.5% and a Click-Through-Rate increase of 280.7%. We can also track offline revenue through our call centre and have seen reservations increase by 818.96% and revenues increase by 1196.5%.
