The Role of Leadership Buy-in for Operational Excellence Programmes

As with many project-focussed organizational departments, Buy-in from Leadership is absolutely crucial for Operational Excellence teams. Leadership commitment is the way in which a CEO of an organization can get and fully commit efforts into PI programmes. They do this by investing time, dollars and effort into all initiatives brought forward by the OpEx professionals. The top down approach is important, as commitment comes from the top and this sets the precedence for the rest of the organization. For phenomenal transformative change and supreme operational excellence to be experienced in organizations, committed leadership, allocated resources of time & staff and financial investment is needed to make it happen.

For example, the top organizations have and have had phenomenal leadership, so much so that their success today is largely owed to by the decisions and leadership that was in place up to 10 years ago. Their success today, was largely set on the right trajectory in the past. Good decisions, leadership commitment and buy-in from team leaders and champions in the business has led to their success today.

Engaging Leadership with Operational Excellence through Strategic Alignment and Visual Management

How can you encourage Leadership Buy-In for an Operational Excellence Project?

OpEx professionals struggling to get commitment and buy-in for programmes lack the commitment, support and encouragement from their leaders. This is often due to the need for leaders to see 'proof' of a programme working, and often wanting this proof fast - something that is rarely doable in a long-term Operational Excellence project.

OpEx professionals are experiencing huge challenges with getting leadership support and buy-in so this makes their jobs ten times harder. Understanding what leaders want from OpEx programmes will be key though. Before approaching a leader to pitch or push for your program, imagine these questions running through your own head:

  • How do they decide what is a good return on investment?
  • What does a successful programme look like to them?
  • What time frame do they expect results in?

All the answers answered would be of great insight for OpEx professionals. With leadership commitment and buy-in, OpEx programme implementation would, more often than not, be swift, efficient and extremely effective.
