Using Artificial Intelligence to Prevent Stuck Pipe and Save

Nearly $30 Million in Costs

In the oil and gas industry, stuck pipe incidents can bring entire drilling operations to a halt, imposing significant amounts of downtime and associated costs related to equipment damages and repairs – industry estimates show stuck pipe events account for up to 30% of Non-Productive Time (NPT), and cost the industry over $250 million per year. A drilling operator of a large national oil company in the Middle East estimates up to $30 million in costs on stuck pipe events alone.

With the considerable impact of stuck pipe events and a desire for digital transformation in mind, the drilling operator approached SparkCognition, a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) software solutions for business, to create and deploy a machine learning (ML) solution to predict stuck pipe events. Traditional responses to stuck pipe are reactive – resulting in unplanned downtime, lost revenue, potential damage to equipment, and safety concerns for maintenance personnel. The goal of this project was to create a platform that provides real-time anomaly management, including detection and alerting, allowing the operator enough advance warning of failures to perform corrective, preventive action.

To solve this problem for the drilling operator, SparkCognition took an ML-based modeling approach. Predictive analytics leveraged ML algorithms to select real-time surface parameters collected from operational drilling rigs. These were used in drilling operations to build a baseline model of normal operations. The normal behavior model was then used to analyze surface parameters in real time, identifying and flagging risky deviations from established norms. These anomalous values indicate conditions likely to precede an impending stuck pipe event, tight holes, and other NPT impacting events.

Not only does this enable operators to monitor the overall health of the drilling program, but it also gives drilling engineers and drilling crews ample time to proactively address and prevent the impending stuck pipe event from occurring. Additionally, the solution offers AI-based insights that continuously learn over time.

SparkCognition deployed its solution to drilling well operations, and as a result, was able to detect 96% of stuck pipe events well in advance of the issue. This served to prevent downtime and damage to equipment and saved the operator upward of $30 million each year.
