Flex Workforce Design
 
Flex (Reg. No. 199002645H) is the manufacturing partner of choice that helps a diverse customer base design and build products that improve the world. Through the collective strength of a global workforce across 30 countries and responsible, sustainable operations, Flex delivers technology innovation, supply chain, and manufacturing solutions to diverse industries and end markets.

It started in 2015 when Flex executive management team was looking for a systematic approach on how Flex can utilize labor better and improve the planning of people it needs in the upcoming quarters based on future demand. The Workforce Design team was established with a mandate to find a solution that addresses the complexities of direct and indirect labor planning in Flex. Since then, four solutions (Raptor, Predictor, Statis and Mamut) have been developed that address each of the problem areas and tie into a wholistic concept and system solution deployed across more than 90% of the organization. The team located across three regions of the world constantly develops and maintains the solutions. They are also charged with implementation, training and most importantly with operational reviews where efficiency data is reviewed. Operational review allows Flex to closely monitor labor efficiency, ensure market competitiveness and accurate labor planning.
 
Since then, Workforce Design (WFD) has collaborated with numerous areas like Operations, Finance, Human Resource (HR), Materials, Information Technology (IT) etc to establish required business processes, documents, deployed tools, as well as establishing KOIs which are now being reviewed.

With humble beginnings, Workforce Design started small with excel sheets, now we have a full Workforce Design system in place, which not only covers people planning and efficiency measurements but also solved some urgent needs in Flex by developing a Downtime identification and tracking system, as well as a Standard Time maintenance tool.

Tool Deployment & Penetration rate: 2019-2021
• Raptor coverage: 98% sites
• Mamut coverage: 63% sites & 74% SMT Lines
• Statis coverage: 63% sites & 85,000 Manufacture Items
• Predictor coverage: 98% sites
• Direct Labor Coverage: 93% (120,000 employees)
• Indirect Labor Coverage: 86% (22,000 employees)

Value creation: 2019-2021
• Systematic approach to labor planning, downtime recording and efficiency tracking
• Standardized way of working across 90 sites
• Introduction of transparency and measurable metrics
• Downtime reduced from 13.1 million to 2.06 million hours (84% improvement)
• Direct Labor Efficiency increased from 80.5% to 89.5% (9% improvement)
• Operations VAM per FTE (Full Time Equivalent) improved by 17%
• Indirect Labor FTE (Full Time Equivalent) Planning variance improved from +35% to -1%
 
Global Recognition for Flex and Workforce Design
• Patent obtained for StaTiS
• Patents for other solutions pending
