Read this article about Ingersoll Rand/Trane Technologies, Best Achievement in Cultural Transformation & Sustainability to deliver a high performing Enterprise Excellence culture, selected by the independent judging panel, for the 2020 Business Transformation & Operational Excellence Industry Awards program.

Winning Culture, Growth Excellence and Operational Excellence are the three core pillars of our enterprise strategy that lead to engaged employees, delighted customers and confident shareholders. Operational Excellence is part of our lean culture; it is our commitment to continuously improving our effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability in everything we do.

The Team Leader Development Program (TLDP) is an immersive 8 week experience that is a foundational cornerstone for our lean culture.  The program engages, teaches and empowers our hourly team leaders in our manufacturing locations to realize their full potential and ability through a blend of experiences in the classroom, practice on the shop floor and through coaching and mentoring opportunities to develop the people, process and problem solving skills needed to be effective lean leaders.  This unique program aligns to our focus on developing leaders at all levels and blends leadership development with lean skill development and application.

TLDP receives significant senior leader sponsorship and support from our Operational Excellence, Global Integrated Supply Chain and HR leadership.  The strong support for the program and the senior leader champions significantly contributes to the global success of the program and to the development of our team leaders.  This program helps us to realize many cultural benefits, most notably in our ability to retain, promote and engage this critical population of hourly team leaders.

Program participants receive one-on-one coaching, development and feedback from plant leader mentors to help them build depth and capability. The program curriculum is cumulative with reflections and teach-backs throughout to consider key learnings from the current week and the cumulative impact of overall program objectives.  Each week builds upon the next with an opportunity to continually practice skills and demonstrate ability to apply the skills through formal presentations and practical applications.  This process further develops participant skills in teamwork, collaboration, influencing others, leadership and presentation.

The Team Leader Development Program (TLDP) has impacted over 1,400 participants since the pilot session in 2014 from 47 global sites in 12 countries.  Team Leaders, Group Leaders and Supervisors have attended the training.  We have saturated approximately 60% of the Team Leader / Group Leader population.

TLDP is delivered in 9 languages: Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, French, English, German, Hindi, Italian, Chinese and Spanish.

TLDP has had a positive impact on human capital metrics, specifically retention, promotion and employee engagement.

  • Retention of TLDP target audience graduates since program inception is, on average, 98%
  • Analysis of promotion rates has proven that TLDP graduates are promoted over 2 times more than those in similar roles who have not experienced the program
  • 2019 employee engagement data shows separation of metrics when looking at employees who report to hourly team leaders who graduated from TLDP versus employees who report to hourly team leaders who did not graduate from TLDP

We are proud of the many accomplishments of our TLDP graduates who are exemplifying our winning culture in our manufacturing sites across the globe.
