Cisco's 2020 AWARD FINALIST CASE STUDY : Best Achievement in Cultural Transformation & Sustainability to deliver a high performing Enterprise Excellence culture

For many years, Cisco’s leadership has recognized that workforce diversity is critical to growing the business. However, the state of diversity in the organization—and how to improve it—was difficult to see and understand for most leaders. The company knew it had to enable inclusive workforce planning and hiring to drive action and effect change.

Cisco internally developed a digital solution suite to transform how we solve for diversity, inclusion and equity known as Diverse Talent Accelerators (DTA). Cisco designed and built DTA from the ground up to give our leaders business intelligence, geo-data, process automation, augmented content, and interactive guidance – at the point of decision making – to accelerate diverse top talent across the business.

We built a suite of four solutions targeted at different levels of management within the company as part of a comprehensive Inclusive Workforce Planning strategy:

  • Smart Insights helps VPs and above reset diverse talent baseline share and aspirations, rethink inclusive hiring strategies, and respond to opportunities to capture a competitive share of diverse talent.
  • Smart Tracker provides data to help business leaders understand their organization’s mix of diverse talent and where to recruit. With search capabilities including gender, job family, experience, and location, it enables focused and accelerated recruitment.
  • Smart Start by Textio helps create job advertisements designed for maximum impact. It offers a simple, intuitive interface and a clear, graphic scoring system that helps recruiting teams neutralize bias and utilize vocabulary and phrasing that’s proven to resonate with a wide array of candidates.
  • Smart Select simplifies the process of assembling and participating in diverse interviewer panels, with capabilities that enable managers to search for participants by gender, grade, region, role, skills and more.

The results speak for themselves: our initial pilot of DTA with our Meraki acquisition saw a 7% increase in the number of women employees (vs. 1.8% for Cisco overall) and increased ethnic diversity – up 10-12% in nearly every category that we report on (vs. 1-4% for Cisco overall). Our Advanced Services organization was also over baseline share of diversity in every category after piloting DTA.

As of FY19, DTA has now been rolled out to the business. 100% of our Executive Leadership Team have used these solutions to create detailed Action Plans to accelerate diversity, inclusion and collaboration throughout their organizations. We are the most diverse Cisco since 1998, and we are confident that our DTA solutions will help us continue this upward trajectory and further enhance our progress in finding, attracting, and accelerating diverse top talent to deliver on Cisco’s business objectives.
