Countless organizations conduct annual strategic planning exercises and 70% of those plans fail – organizational saturation and the inability to sustain aspirational plans are the two leading failure factors.  Now is the time to stop talking about the next plan, tool, meeting, or strategy and examine first and foremost the purpose, function, and output of your tactical “Way of Work.”  Does your organization have a Tactical Way of Work? Too often strategic plans are abstract and aspirational because they don’t TRANSLATE.  Does your organization have a TRANSLATION ISSUE? Translating Strategic Intent to Tactical Execution.

For the last 27 years, Shane and his team have been assisting organizations translate Strategic Intent into Tactical Execution processes.  These tactical execution processes form the foundation of the Process Based Leadership® methodology.  Specifically the following elements:

  1. A Business Acumen Process – Making Metrics Matter and Building a “Thermostatic Application” of Data – Fundamentally, it isn’t about the Data, success depends of the definition and deployment of the System of Use. What is your System of Use with regard to Making Metrics Matter?

  2. An Execution Process – Making accountability personal, visible, and measurable. Too often accountability is vague and abstract, ultimately creating a culture of accountability predicated on “Selective Engagement” to power the performance of the team – Strategy fails due to poor execution – What is your Execution Process? If it is not visible, personal, and measurable, it is ultimately Optional.

  3. A Communication Process – Is there a harmonized Daily Management System coupled with a Weekly Scorecard Meeting? This biggest issue facing organizations today lies in their tolerance of meetings that do not move the business forward. Meeting saturation coupled with ambiguous execution and metrics that feel more like Thermometers vs Thermostats are sucking the life out of urgency and accountability.

  4. A Behavioral Process – Does your company have a “Go Live” date for Behavioral Expectations? Are expectations aspirational or demonstrative? Is “Ignorance as an excuse” a common response when attempting to hold folks accountable? Too often Strategy lives in the abstract and aspirational as opposed to the tactical and demonstrative. There must be an institutionalized “Way of Work” that is embedded in each team as the on-boarding and assimilation tool.

These elements form the basis for our Process Based Leadership® methodology.  The creation and deployment of these tactical systems are required to move Strategic Intent to Tactical execution.
