Read this article about LION , one of our finalists, in the category Best Achievement of Operational Excellence in Manufacturing, selected by the independent judging panel, for the 2020 Business Transformation & Operational Excellence Industry Awards program.

LION OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAMME

LION, a beer business based in Australia and New Zealand, has delivered a substantial improvement across all Key Performance Indicators through a structured Operational Excellence Programme.  The programme has cemented their place as the number one supplier in the industry in both Australia and New Zealand and the business is celebrating a double win at the Australian Drinks Awards in 2019, taking out Supplier of the Year and the Supply Chain Management award.

Lion employees over 1000 people in the Supply Chain function over Australia and New Zealand and operates 13 breweries across their network.

Faced with a challenging business environment, a strategic decision was made to commence an Operational Excellence Programme in 2009 to deliver:

  • An improvement in efficiency and reduce waste; whilst…
  • Improving Safety, Improving Customer and Consumer Satisfaction and becoming more Agile to adapt to the changing needs of the market

Over a 10 year period, Lion has transformed the way the supply chain operates. The implementation has delivered a competitive advantage to the business and resulted in high levels of engagement through a balanced top down and bottom up approach.  Whilst many businesses face a plateau after a certain period of improvement, Lion’s journey is accelerating.  The business is now delivering a number of Key Performance Indicators at world class level across a balanced scorecard.

Building on a lean platform of 5S, Focused Improvement, Teamwork and Visual management, the Lion Best Practice team developed an in-house approach to accelerating performance and the operationalisation of solutions to build an Operating System. This Workpackage approach cuts across the traditional approach of implementing lean through separate workstreams and has empowered individuals across the network to develop new standards for the Operating System and solve complex problems for the whole network.

In just the last 36 months, 21 major workpackages have been developed and deployed, touching every important part of how Lion runs and improves its operations.

Whilst there are other contributors to improvement apart from the Operational Excellence Programme (such as capital investment), the OE Programme has added accelerating pace to improvement through:

  • Network wide visibility of strategic performance improvement priorities and opportunities
  • Increased number of people capable of generating improved performance and engagement from the shop-floor in improving the business every day.
  • Greater breadth of improvement; number of performance areas improving or at least sustaining 2 or 3 times greater than pre-OE programme. In the last 3 years, this pace has accelerated even further through the latest phase of the improvement programme.

The Best Practice team within the business have codified the model and ensured its scalability across any of the platforms in which Lion operates thereby cementing the businesses ability to deliver outstanding results wherever it operates.
