Read this article about IBM, Finalist in the Best Achievement in Cultural Transformation & Sustainability to deliver a high performing Enterprise Excellence culture, selected by the independent judging panel, for the 2020 Business Transformation & Operational Excellence Industry Awards program.

IBM has a long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion, recognizing the unique value and skills every individual brings to the workplace. We believe, we create better innovations and outcomes when we incorporate diversity into our business.

In order to boost our positive workplace environment and the company’s social life at our shared service center in Budapest, Hungary, a new project was established in 2018 with the following objectives:

  • Increase Employee Empowerment: Fostering bottom-up ideas by involved dedicated colleagues, providing them with skill development opportunities.
  • Enhance Inclusion: Enhancing inclusive and family-friendly work atmosphere.
  • Foster Colleagues’ Loyalty: Raising employee engagement and loyalty level of the colleagues.
  • Retain talents – Reduce Attrition: Keeping our talents which contributes to a lower level of attrition rate.
  • Improve Company reputation: In Hungary year by year we work hard to thrive in our competitive market and to keep our reputation high locally.

The initiative is based on the operation of 8 social and diversity teams with voluntary and highly engaged coordinators running under the supervision of the company’s Engagement Lead. The social teams brainstormed creative ideas based on employee’s needs and desires, then after the management’s review, the required budget was allocated and in total 72 programs were implemented in 2018 with a total of 1500+ participants. In 2019 with restless enthusiasm and even higher attendance rate, the efforts were ongoing to create new innovative ideas for the programs and implement them effectively.

Examples of implemented programs:

Office Child Care program: based on employee needs in 2018 a one-week office camp (with professional animators) was arranged as pilot in order to help out the parents during the 10-week-long summer school vacation. The parents appreciated it so much that in 2019 this program was organized for 3 weeks in 2 locations and with a higher participation rate (2018: 48 parents brought 67 children, 2019: 56 parents brought 88 children).

Maternity Experience Project: Based on the suggestion of the Parents Club a process improvement was implemented for female colleagues on maternity leave, including enhancements to “Stay connected” programs for the maternity leavers, and appointing a dedicated HR professional to serve the needs of the colleagues on maternity leave with dedicated time frames for open hours.

Due to this initiative we reached excellent results on a company level. We increased employee empowerment involving dedicated colleagues by giving them the responsibility and autonomy to manage the new social teams. As a result, inclusive and family friendly work atmosphere was enhanced and employee engagement level of the colleagues raised, too. We were able to strengthen our employee retention strategy as well. Not only internal feedback but also several, externally obtained, awards demonstrate our significant achievements.

Some of the results are provided below (change YTY):

  • Company level ‘engagement index’: +2 points (2018), +3 points (2019)
  • Company level ‘advocacy index’: +2 points (2018), +5 points (2019)
  • Attrition rate: -2% (2018), - 3% (2019).
