About Flex

As a global supply chain solutions and manufacturing company, Flex specializes in innovative design, engineering, manufacturing, real-time supply chain insight and logistics services. Flex provides a variety of solutions to customers in a range of industries, including automotive, cloud, communications, consumer, home & lifestyle, energy, and industrial, among others.

Center of Excellence

With a global presence, the company selected its Milpitas, California site to pilot a center of excellence initiative in the form of a customer innovation center. Located in Silicon Valley, where time-to-market is critical, the team manages a dynamic set of customers in various stages of the product lifecycle.

In 2012, Milpitas developed a customer innovation center to support a broad portfolio of customers and products, spanning network devices, capital equipment, energy products and wearables, among others. To help customers launch products faster and capture market share, the team strengthened capabilities with the innovation center. Through the addition, the site provides accelerated prototype-to-mass production time and flexible supply chain solutions at a high quality and competitive price.

The Milpitas site must adapt to dynamic changes and focus on continuous improvement to help meet financial objectives and deliver value for all stakeholders.

With the support of local management, the Business Excellence (BE) team drives transformation using Lean-Six Sigma methods for continuous improvement. The Flex Lean Enterprise (FLE) is based on the Toyota Production System, which applies Lean tools sequentially to eliminate waste and create value for customers. The Milpitas BE team’s efforts include facilitating a campus evolution from a manufacturing site to include a customer innovation center. Faster time to market and accelerated prototype build requires efficient resource management, business processes innovation and cross-functional collaboration with design, manufacturing and supply chain teams.

The Milpitas team, along with other Flex sites, strive to double the good, half the bad with triple the speed and sustain.

  • Continuous improvement projects: Over 700
  • Average yearly employee participation in BE activities: 45% of HC
