TQL Product Model Drives Innovation at Total Quality Logistics

Total Quality Logistics (TQL) is a freight brokerage and third-party logistics firm that provides world-class service to its shipping customers, and to the carriers moving the freight. For much of our 24-year history, we’ve used a suite of proprietary technologies to oversee the freight movement process, from tendering loads to delivery.

TQL has grown from a two-man start up in 1997 to a 7000+ person, multi-billion dollar company today. As a service-based organization in the transportation industry, creating tools that help our people manage the delivery of goods has been key to our success from the beginning.

Our technologies work hand-in-hand with our work ethic work to give us the ability to turn on a dime and get the job done in an industry where everything from pandemics to weather affect deliverability. These technologies include:

· Load Manager – Our freight management tool is used by our sales brokers and logistics coordinators to arrange loads of freight. It encompasses many of our lines of business and service offerings into one suite of software.

· TQL TRAX – This portal and app gives visibility of loads in transit to our customers. They can also tender payment, book future loads, and use their data to find greater efficiencies in their supply chain.

· Carrier Dashboard – This portal and app is for the carriers moving loads for us. It gives them the information they need to pick up and deliver loads in their care, as well as direct and distributed communication with the TQL team they are working with.

From our rapid growth internally to rapid changes in the supply chain industry, we found the technology development cycle that brought us so far wasn’t going to take us much further. We needed something faster and more flexible to keep up with the pace of technology and the volatility inherent in the transportation industry. We needed to think differently about our technology development approach.

Over the last 24 months, we’ve transformed from a project-focused delivery structure to a feature-based product-led model engineered to deliver continuous value to our products and service offerings. This ensures greater alignment with company strategic objectives, faster delivery of capabilities with faster time to market and an organizational framework to support the company growth.

In 2019, a group of IT, operations and product development professionals launched the TQL Product Model initiative.

The initiative’s objective is to better align technology development to business objectives to ensure technical capabilities are always in line with how we deliver business services.

Using the principles of agile scrum and other rapid development methodologies, cross-functional teams that include product managers, software engineers, operations specialists and program managers form as existing product lifecycle timelines come to an end. This enables a smooth transition to the new structure.

Our new product-led model drives innovation across the entire company, making us faster, leaner and better able to deliver the best service to our key stakeholders – our customers, our carriers and each other.
