Simplifying, standardizing & Optimizing accelerates Digital Transformation
 
Jabil is a global manufacturing solutions provider with over 50 million sq ft of manufacturing space in over 100 sites globally. We are the brand behind the brand, serving over 400 of the world’s most recognizable brands across key end markets.
 
In Operations, we contribute to Jabil’s vision and goals by innovating and scaling the most progressive factories. We believe a predictable environment will deliver bottom line results by an order of magnitude. If we can predict product failures or material shortages before they happen, we can prevent faults from happening which will ultimately result in increased speed, improved quality, and decreased operating costs.

Our digital transformation journey started in May 2019 by leveraging and strengthening our foundation across the 28 sites in our segment. At the time, years of explosive growth had resulted in a complex internal operating environment, caused by a lack of globally standard, end-to-end processes. Operational performance wasn’t realizing maximum benefit from continuous improvement, and innovation was often trapped at the site level or in a state of pilot purgatory (unable to scale).
To address these challenges and realize our vision of a predictable environment, we established a global EMS Operations strategy to accomplish three strategic objectives:
 
1. Develop, engage, and retain deep, technical experts and a next generation of Operations leaders.
2. Simplify and standardize our environment and implement a closed loop operating model so the benefits of one factory’s innovation is felt by all.
3. Capture the full potential of site innovation and leverage digital and automation technologies to realize transformative outcomes.
 
Key tenets of our strategy were to invest in upfront quality costs and to put our people at the center of our journey. By investing in upfront quality costs our goal was to drive standard operations, reduce non-value-added activities and shift the balance of our resources from firefighting to working on prevention activities. By putting our people at the center of our strategy, our goal was to harness the power of our 70,000+ strong workforce and become aggregators of innovation to accelerate our digital transformation. Critical elements that contributed to the transformation in performance include:
 
Performance Visibility: Unified Metrics as a single source of truth
Integrated Blueprint Management (IBPM): Business process management system
Standard Training & Certification Programs: Training and certification programs for technical talent
Jabil Optimization & Innovation Network (JOINN): Process and tool for aggregating site innovation
Proprietary Jabil Automation Gear (JAG): Flexible, modular, reconfigurable & redeployable automation platform
Simplified Environment: Aggregated and rationalized site applications and consolidated, simplified & standardized SOPs

As a result of our initiatives and operating model, we have changed our cost trajectory, simplified our operating environment and realized double digit improvements across all operational KPIs. With end-to-end connectivity and integration well underway, we are on an accelerated path to achieve full process and materials control and well-positioned to accelerate our digital transformation by applying automation and digital technologies to present faults from happening, delivering a fully optimized ecosystem.

The Digital Transformation & Operational Excellence Awards have been established to showcase globally the most outstanding achievements through the application of Business Transformation, Digital Transformation, Operational Excellence & Innovation Excellence programs. The Business Transformation & Operational Excellence Awards are open to all organizations, both private and public sector, across the globe, which have implemented Business Transformation, Digital Transformation, Operational Excellence & Innovation Excellence programs to deliver outstanding business results.
