While finance organizations are used to massive changes, digital represents a frontier that hasn’t been explored before – finance is now expected to be a business partner along with delivering process excellence. Disruption has become the norm and HP Inc. has always been at the forefront of embracing digital transformation, in tandem with our customers and partners. Within HP, Finance Global Operations (FGO) has pioneered digital to keep pace with changing expectations and opportunities.
To innovate with digital, organizations first need to create roadmaps that will act as the guiding star for an overarching vision of transformation across the organization. For example, at FGO, our vision to position “Operations as a competitive advantage” was grounded with a roadmap for end-to-end process re-engineering and automation. This roadmap, in-turn, was aligned with our organizational goal and consistent with our CFO’s priorities.
As a first step in our journey, we initiated a market assessment of the latest technology trends like RPA, advanced analytics, AI, blockchain etc., that are transforming finance operations. Following this, an internal analysis was conducted to define our technology priorities – the key inputs for this analysis were CFO priorities, HP’s move to a single ERP system, and our own strategic priorities for transformation. Once we had the emerging trends/technologies prioritized, we shifted our focus towards people strategy, which is one of the most important pillars for an organization’s success. For a sustainable and high impact digital transformation, we pursued the following three goals under people strategy:
This people strategy is supported by a robust change management plan that enables our employees to see digital as an opportunity for career-development. It has helped them to visualize how technology implementation can help them innovate in their day-to-day activities. Not only has this resulted in an improved growth mindset amongst employees, but there has also been an enhancement in efficiency and business insights generation.
This is a multi-year talent and technology development exercise that was kicked-off in early 2018 with the target of transforming our workforce and making our processes friction-less. As a result of our continuing success, the same template has been adopted for the rest of Finance across HP, with FGO at the helm.
When this journey was initiated, use cases were limited for Finance in the industry. Based on our own market analysis and knowledge gleaned from research we were able to create a framework that can be used as a benchmark across organizations.
Digital transformation is an amalgamation of the right technologies, right organizational priorities and the right people strategy; and with a robust transformation roadmap and vision underpinning this transition, organizations can only stand to gain from the digital revolution.
