Nationwide Financial IT: Striving for Operational Excellence and a Problem-Solving Culture
In this digital age, Nationwide’s Information Technology capability is even more vital to our success than ever. In 2014, we began a journey to understand how our IT function could better support our key imperatives of differentiated value and operational efficiency. We had realized much success in adopting agile practices across 50+ agile teams. We leveraged a Lean Management System to scale and drive operational excellence into everything we do in IT.
We began small with a few experiments that realized impressive results. We then scaled to all 200+ Agile teams and have expanded to all IT departments.
Our lean transformation centered around the elimination of duplicate roles, optimizing resource deployment, rightsizing our delivery methods to improve productivity, and becoming more efficient in testing while maintaining high quality. For each area, the Lean Transformation team focused on 5 dimensions: team performance, flow of work, effectiveness of lean management, management and execution organization structures, and local countermeasures.
To sustain the tremendous improvements on the production floor, we installed a Lean Management System from C-suite to front line leaders.
We have incorporated DevOps practices and Continuous Learning techniques to further our success and overall transformation. Thus far, we have realized a 16% reduction in hours per Agile story card and substantial annualized savings of nearly $80 million.
Nationwide IT will continue to extend these concepts more broadly across our value streams by installing end-to-end product teams with transparency into their overall performance and value to the customer.
